  • Burbage Police Update

    Alert message sent 19/12/2020 18:38:00

Information sent on behalf of Leicestershire Police

Hello. Thank you for being part of Burbage Neighbourhood Link https://www.neighbourhoodlink.co.uk/  . Just to say, I was amazed at the amount of kind remarks and compliments from residents via Neighbourhood link and the Burbage Village Community Facebook post relating to my award. Thank you very much, it is really appreciated and means a lot.

Here is an update of Police activity and incidents in the area over recent days in Burbage.
    • We have received two reports at the time of writing of Christmas decorations being stolen from gardens on Meadow Drive at 01:25 on the 16th December and Lutterworth Road between 20:00 on 18th December and 11:30 on the 19th. We are currently reviewing information given to us and have spoken to local residents. If you have a good description of any vehicle or person involved or ideally a registration plate, please get in touch. For us to progress these crimes we need some form of information to work with.

It is such as shame these disgraceful incidents happen at a time when residents are trying to help each other. I have distributed any information I have received to colleagues to raise awareness when patrolling the area. As residents have noticeably made a fantastic effort this year to light up the village, it may be worth considering any extra security measures such as sensor lights in your garden, locking gates, securely attaching your items by screws or padlocks. Please also check your CCTV to ensure it is pointing where it needs to be and clear those cob webs away. The items taken have been higher value items.
    • A resident has been in touch to notify us of the below scam. I have not seen any reports of this in our area but I would be very mindful of these types of scams over the coming months.
“Don't know whether or not you will have seen the following. It has been reported on Facebook by a Medical Centre in Wigan! Not our area I Know but I'm sure it won’t be confined to any particular area.
We have been made aware of a Covid Scam targeting older people.
We have reports that older people have received a telephone calls offering them a Covid vaccination in their home. There are no offers in the GM Conurbation or in Wigan Borough or through any GP surgery in Wigan for Covid vaccinations to be given at home. They are only given in a professional health setting by qualified health professionals by appointment.
Persons eligible for a vaccination will NOT be asked for any money in order to receive a vaccination.
    Please inform your relatives/neighbours/friends”

    Anti-Social Behaviour

I have been contacted by an 87 year old resident on Coventry Road. Unfortunately at around 0100 on the 18th December the resident heard a bang on the window. The following morning the resident looked to find a couple of smashed eggs on the window. We are completing some investigations to try and find out what happened but if you have any information around this please get in touch. This type of disgusting behaviour is not something that anyone should be subjected to, especially an 87 year old resident. We have not located any other incidents so hopefully this is a one off. If you see or hear anything suspicious please call 999 or 101 immediately.

Following on from complaints within the community around traffic issues around Sketchley Primary and Burbage Inf/Jnr Schools. I have spoken with several residents who are looking at initiatives to support with traffic issues at key times.

We have previously completed activities around the Schools at key times including speaking with parents, challenging parking, speed gun activities, the use of the MVAS box and BRAKE road safety week https://www.brake.org.uk/ ,where I found funding to complete activities in the village to educate children and adults. This included free bicycle lights for children and paper boys/girls in the area.

We continue to work with the local authorities but please be aware of the following,
    • Leicestershire County Council will authorise parking attendants to visit sites as they have the ticket powers.
    • Schools need to apply for Bertie and Belinda bollard (search them on the internet for more information), which will help protect the immediate area around schools from vehicles mounting the pavement and may help reduce speed. These bollards do cost money though which would need to be found.
    • Other permanent solutions to some of the issues raised can only be put in place by partner agencies like the county council such as double yellow lines, disabled parking, lowered curbs, zig zag road markings.
The Burbage beat team will continue to attend these locations as and when we are in a position to do so.  Parents and people travelling to work have a massive say in these issues. Please consider the safety of the children, other pedestrians and local residents when you are driving in the area. I am seeking the advice of other agencies and departments over the coming weeks and months to see what can be done and what productive and effective initiatives can be used in our village.

Ultimately any solution or improvement requires the support, teamwork and passion of everyone to help make it work and make our village a safer place. I have put some links at the bottom of the message that you may find useful.

    You said, we did

We received a report of a suspicious abandoned vehicle around Woodland Avenue. Officers attended and the vehicle has been removed. Investigations are ongoing around its activity.

Report received reports regarding an abandoned vehicle on Sapcote Road, We have attended the location, spoken to insured driver and hopefully the vehicle will be removed shortly. Thank you for reporting these vehicles. You can check basic vehicle details on the government website if you have the registration or there are lot of good free apps you can download.

Vehicle and bicycle patrols all around the village. Myself, PC Sharpe and PC Miller amongst other officers have been in the area throughout the day and night.
